This is a very nice flatware set - it has service for 8 (40 pieces) plus 5 extra serving pieces to finish the set. Each piece comes in an individual plastic bag to prevent scratching or damage during transit/storage.This particular flatware is called 18/10. If you aren't aware, that means it has 18% Chromium and 10% Nickel. The nickel content gives the flatware heft, shine, and it helps keep the flatware from rusting or corroding and pitting.
You normally find Flatware anywhere from 18/0 to 18/10, meaning 18/10 is one of your highest options for long-term use (unless you want to go to the real silver!). That's why this set costs more than those cheap sets you find in the store. In fact, your cheapest sets normally have plastic handles to minimize the amount of metal and to keep your costs down.
If you are a newlywed and trying to keep your costs down while you buy a few things for a kitchen, you can get away with some cheaper items for a couple of years. But for long-term use, it's nice to know that the flatware you own will actually last and stay nice looking. And, if you are looking for a gift, you probably know that Oneida is nice stuff.
You can tell I'm a fan of Oneida ... but that's because I couldn't afford the nice stuff when I first got married, so I had to deal with a bit of "rust" on my cheap stuff.
