I tried food-coloring the batter, though, and I tried using white and yellow cake mixes with the various colors, and most of the cakes came out with a golden-brown tint to the ridges and fine details instead of like the pictures here, so you couldn't tell much of a difference in the colors of the batter.I'm not much of a cook, so I'm sure there are better techniques, like maybe different greasing methods, special food colorings, a cooler oven, or a different cake mix (I just used some from the store).I haven't tried chocolate mix yet, either.Or, maybe the bigger rose pan doesn't have such small details to "brown" as easily.
Anyway, the roses look nice, they have good details, and they come out of the pan very easily.Check out reviews on the larger rose pan on Amazon for some good decorating tips (like strawberry glaze).There are knock-offs of these pans out there, so if you see some reviews that say the cake sticks to the pan, keep in mind they might not have used the Nordic Ware brand.Mine didn't stick.I am very happy with this product.
