For some reason the Japanese beetles have come out in full force this summer.I've always had them munching on my rhubarb plants but this year they have made a major assault on three of my apple trees and they are starting on two others. While the traps will not solve the problem they do live up to their promise of attracting the beetles to the trap. One thing should be stressed when cleaning out the container.Do it in the morning or evening when it has cooled down. What I do is take two plastic grocery bags(one inside another) and untwist the hard plastic container. The container was so full that the beetles were dropping out as I undid the container.Quickly (I really stress this) put the opening of the container in the bag and shake it.The beetles will fall into the bag and after you feel as though you've got the container cleaned out, close the bag fast.If you do this at noon you will find yourself dealing with very active beetles flying out of the container and buzzing near you.
I left my bag laying out in the hot afternoon sun and then disposed of the beetles in my garbage can.
